Mercato Trionfale, Roma

We took a relaxed tour of the Mercato Trionfale, a lively, authentic marketplace where locals shop every day for the very freshest groceries. The Roman approach to fresh food is delightfully simple: you buy what you plan to cook that same day, so ingredients are at their absolute peak. We really enjoyed this genuine, non‑touristy stop. We were fortunate to have a knowledgeable local guide show us around, and here’s what we ate!

Maritozzo

A traditional Roman pastry featuring a soft, lightly sweetened brioche bun generously filled with fluffy whipped cream—a simple yet irresistible Italian classic.

Prosciutto and Mozzarella di Bufala

Prosciutto, Italy's iconic dry-cured ham, sliced paper-thin and celebrated for its silky texture, delicate sweetness, and rich savory flavor, pairs perfectly with the true star of the show (in my opinion!) - Mozzarella di Bufalo - made from milk literally pulled from a water buffalo that morning! I don’t think we have ever had a fresher cheese than that. This fresh Italian cheese is prized for its creamy center, delicate tang, and incredibly fresh, milky taste.

Lardo

This was a showstopper. Lardo is a luxurious Italian delicacy made from cured pork fatback, seasoned with herbs and spices, then thinly sliced to reveal a silky texture and rich flavor. It was literally melt in your mouth.

Porcetta

A traditional Italian roast of herb-stuffed pork, slow-roasted until the meat is tender and juicy beneath a perfectly crisp, flavorful skin.

Crostatina

A charming Italian tart with a buttery pastry crust, typically filled with fruit jam, pastry cream, or chocolate for a simple yet delightful sweet treat.

Suppli

A beloved Roman street food made of crispy fried rice balls filled with savory tomato-seasoned rice and melted mozzarella, creating a deliciously gooey center.

Roman Pizza

Known for its thin, crispy crust and simple, high-quality toppings, Roman pizza delivers a light, flavorful bite that's perfect for enjoying by the slice or sharing at the table.
